ACT Amateur Brewing Championship

The club hosts an annual ‘state’ competition known as the ACT Amateur Brewing Championship (ACTABC). This has been growing in popularity every year, and serves as both the highlight and culmination of our competition year, and the qualifying round for the Australian Amateur Brewing Championship (AABC).

For 2011, the ACTABC will be held over the weekend of 23 – 25 September 2011 at the Wig and Pen Brewery in Canberra.   Entrants are invited to enter their beers against the AABC’s Styleguides (available on the AABC Website).

Submission Guidelines

Entrants will need to provide 2 x 345/375 ml stubbies or 1 x 500/750 ml bottle per entry.

Entry in the ACTABC is $5 for Canberra Brewers members and $8 for non-members to be paid on entry.  Payment is required before results/scores are released

Entries will be completed online where each entry will be given a number – this number is to be affixed to your bottle(s).

Brewers can enter up to two beers per category, but not two beers into the same style.

The entry form closes on 16 September 2011, and entries need to be dropped off at Plonk (Fyshwick markets) or the Wig and Pen by 1200 hrs on Saturday 17 September 2011. For out-of-town entries, please email the Competition Secretary for mailing details.

ACTABC Prizes

There are also a couple of major awards associated with the ACTABC:

  • Best Beer of Show; determined by the highest score. As part of this prize, the best beer is typically brewed by the Wig and Pen Brewery in Canberra.
  • Champion Brewer; determined by a tally of points for 1st to 3rd places averaged across the number of entries subject to a minimum number.
  • We also compile recipe booklets from the competitions so that other brewers can learn and benefit from the winning brews.

Scoring for the ACTABC will be out of a maximum of 150 points. Gold medal beers score 120 points or higher, Silver medal beers score a minimum of 108 points, and Bronze medal beers score a minimum of 95 points.

Nationals Qualification

Subject to a minimum points tally, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place-getters in each ACTABC style qualify to enter a beer in the same style in the AABC, which is to be held in Adelaide on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd October 2011.
