The
clubs first video created by Megan 'Sister Hotstuff' Watson is live on the
Canberra Brewers YouTube channel for everyone to enjoy.
Megan

The video was created as a
documentary subject university assignment, part of her Bachelor of Media Arts
& Production.

Megan was given four minutes to show the process of making something from raw
ingredients through to the finished product with no additional sound or music
permitted except ambient sound and visuals.

Naturally Megan chose beer as the topic and filmed the piece using her Nikon
D7000 dSLR camera.

The showdown of the year happened at this month’s meeting with the club tasting and voting on which beer they thought was the best from the Brew Wars showdown from last month’s international homebrew day.  IMG_4370

Craig “Stagger” Webber got the ball rolling discussing the events from the International Home Brew Day Brew Off and the different methodologies used.

Winter has started this week and with it brings one of the hottest club meetings of the year with the tastings of the Brew Wars beers happening this Thursday night.

For those not aware check out the stories below but it will consist of three Kolschs brewed on three different systems by three different brewers as well as an extra one which was separated and cooled in a no-chill cube.

These beers will make up this month’s Brewers Showcase with Craig, Matt and Adam discussing their systems, brewing techniques and the beers themselves.

The beers will be available for blind testing by all members and they’ll be voted on by ballot to see which beer (and technique) is best enjoyed.

The main raffle prize up for this month is a beautiful 30 plate stainless steel chiller just waiting for one lucky member to take it home.

Rug up, get that car heater on for the drive and come on down to the meeting, see you all there.

Dark beers made up this month’s Brewers Showcase with a Robust Porter being presented by Mark ‘Billy’ Bilbrough and a Schwarzbier by Charles ‘Chuck’ Newton. 20120503_wiseman_003

Upon hearing about the Brewers Showcase earlier this year Billy had already made his mind up to do something for the cooler winter months – a Robust Porter.

Inspired by his homebrewing hero Jamil Zainasheff, Billy modified the recipe from ‘Brewing Classic Styles’ slightly to allow the beer to be enjoyed earlier with little aging.

He also discussed the origins of the style, how it changed and disappeared for quite a while and how it was then rediscovered and has once again become a popular style.

Chuck on the other hand decided to brew a Schwarzbier which despite having a little hit and miss history with lagers was quite happy with how it turned out.

Being one of the first times using Midnight Wheat he said he was very happy with the character it imparted into the beer and would definitely use it in his stouts in the future.

Chuck then explained to the members more details about the German dark lager and how it came to be also mentioning he would be interested to see how it fares in the upcoming club competition.

Big thanks to both members for continuing on the Brewers Showcase and educating the club on two of the darker and popular styles of interest to brewers.
