The Canberra Brewers and BentSpoke are sharing the secrets of beer and brewing at Floriade

Partnering with our biggest supporter BentSpoke Brewing Co, the Canberra Brewers are heading to Floriade this Spring to give visitors an introduction to brewing.

Each weekend of the festival, at Commonwealth Park, Canberra, from 11am-12pm we will be giving brewing demonstrations and talking all things ingredients, recipes, mashing and boiling. Eager participants might learn a few things about the hops, yeast and secrets behind BentSpoke’s own Crankshaft – Australia’s favourite IPA, as voted in the yearly GABS Hottest 100!

We are always looking to introduce people to the ‘Science and Nature’ of brewing good beer and knowing the providence of what you consume! Come and watch, smell and taste and meet some of the Canberra Brewers members.

Come along and find out how easy it can be to make world-class beer at home!

Club members – head to the forum to see how you can lend a hand.

Will Stretch be telling us about his experiments, or are we the experiments? No actual intelligence was harmed in the generation of this image.

Brewers, Join us at the Canberra Brewers meeting, Thursday 7 Aug 2025 at the  Polish White Eagle Club. The raffle will have some great prizes and we’ll have some light refreshments to go along with your beers.

Don’t forget to try some of the interesting Euro beers over the bar and also bring your latest and greatest brews to share. Extra NOOKIE points for those who bring a keg to share.

Education

For this month’s education session, Stretch is keeping us guessing. The topic will be “what can we learn from 566 experiments?” I’m sure we’ll get to the bottom of this rabbit hole, or at least the bottom of our beer glasses!

Six pack swap

The six-pack swap is on again! Add your beer details to the Facebook group or the forum, bring your 6 beers to the meeting and walk away with a mixed six-pack to enjoy at your leisure!

Raffle

The raffle will be on again with great prizes up for grabs! Thanks to our sponsors who donate prizes or provide significant discounts on great products. Don’t forget to bring your latest brew along to earn double NOOKIE points with raffle tickets purchased.

ACT Competition

The ACT Championship Brewing Competition is just around the corner! The competition will be held on 12-14 Sep 25 and this is the big one!! There can only be one ACT Champion Brewer!

To deal with the usual large number of entries (mostly from Craig, Stretch and Weenie) we also need volunteers for judging and stewarding. A great opportunity to get experience and be a part of the comp.

More details will be announced at the club meeting, in club emails, the forum and Facebook memes. You can also keep an eye on the competition page for when entries open.

See you at the August Meeting!

Brewers, The next club meeting is fast approaching on 3 July 2025 at the  Polish White Eagle Club from 7.30pm. The raffle will have some great prizes, courtesy of our friends at Mashematics. We know it’s hard to get out in the cold, so to encourage attendance at the meeting, we are offering double NOOKIE points for those who bring beers to share in July and August.

Club Competition

Canberra Brewers Winter Comp was held on Saturday, 28 June at BentSpoke Budding Cells. Thanks to all of the judges and stewards for your assistance on the day. Presentations will be made at the club meeting and results can be found at the Canberra Brewers Winter Comp website.

Club Brewing System

Jason and a team of dedicated club members have been doing great things at Zierholz Brewery in Fyshwick on our 170L brew system. The team has recently brewed a dark mild that will go on sale soon at the Zierholz pop-up bar – the perfect pint for a sunny, Canberra winter’s day! We’ll post some details on Facebok once dates confirmed, so get along and support sponsors and locals!

To hear more about exciting collaborations and the great sponsorship Zierholz has been providing to the club, come to the meeting.

See you at the July Meeting!

Brewers, It’s getting colder, so what a great time to focus on cold fermented beers, and get brewing for the June Club comp! It’s Lager month at the Canberra Brewers meeting, 5 June 2025 at the  Polish White Eagle Club.

The raffle will have some great German-Style lagers (some dark for the Winter) as well as some lager yeast, thanks to Mashematics. Don’t forget to bring your latest and greatest brews to share. Extra NOOKIE points for those who bring a keg the share. We will also have some of our club barrel project beer on tap.

Education

This month’s education session will be on tips for brewing lagers. Although simple to drink and readily available, this style can be deceptively difficult to brew well. The seasoned lager brewers of the club will highlight common issues and provide tips to brewing better lagers.

Beer school’s out!

Congratulations to the seven club members who sat the Beer Judge Certification Program Judging Exam earlier this month. After months (and in some cases years) of preparation, Amber, Ken, Frank, James, David, Richard and Ed judged six beers in 90 minutes, without style guides, and without any prior knowledge of the beers they had to judge. They will be assessed on their scoring, perception, descriptive ability, feedback and completeness and communication, with their scoresheets compared to those of three proctors: Weenie, Stretch and David. Thanks to the proctors and our stewards Nicole, Stephen and Chuck, and the brewers who donated beer for the exam.

A HUGE thanks to BentSpoke for letting us take over their upstairs bar for a Saturday morning – it was an outstanding venue and a great place to enjoy that first beer you don’t have to judge!

See you at the June Meeting!
