How many dry hops are optimal? It’s a question to which everyone has an answer.. but many answers are different. Our July education session will use a recent study undertaken by a US-based Professor of Fermentation Science, Tom Shellhammer, to explore dry hop dosage rates and also show how “hop creep” can cause your dry hops to trigger a re-fermentation and yield unpredictable results.

As always, the education session commences at 7:30pm at the Gorman Arts Centre in Civic, with the monthly club meeting commencing shortly afterward. This is a very worthwhile session for any hop-headed brewer to attend, and remember, the first meeting is free for new members so feel free to bring a friend.

Kurtz At the July club meeting we were lucky enough to get a presentation from Senior Constable Mick Richardson from ACT Policing on responsible alcohol consumption, particularly with relation to driving. The presentation was a fascinating mix of beer consumption and biochemistry, and gave us the opportunity to see just what effect the consumption of alcohol had on the blood-alcohol concentrations (BAC) of various volunteers.

Mick gave a great talk which covered alcohol consumption and why it's really not a very good idea to drink and drive, along with a demonstration of the 'instruments' they use to detect it.

Pic2 Hello fellow lovers of good beer! This year has an excellent line up of events, competitions, meetings, raffle prizes and we have an incredibly enthusiastic President and committee keen to make sure it all happens! For my part as education secretary (and as well as some interesting events and experiments) I hope to bring a few permanent resources to the club for any brewer who feels they need improvement in their brewing methods.

Firstly, like in previous years, we’ll conduct information sessions held during some of this year’s meetings. These will include a few that the club has presented in the past like counter-pressure filling demonstration and calibration of thermometers and temperature controller units as well as a few new sessions. We’ll investigate interesting beers styles and coordinate a mass brewing experiment later in the year to display the differences in recipe formulation, which will be open to any and all who wish to be involved.
