Thursday 7th April from 7:30pm
Polish White Eagle Club
28 David St Turner ACT

(Attendance for non-members is free for their first meeting, but after then a paid membership is required.)

The first Thursday of April is rapidly approaching, and the Club will be back at the Polish Club to talk (and drink) all things beer.

Featuring:

a) Beer

Bring your best, in bottles, growlers or kegs to share – remember they earn NOOKIE points for the annual prize draw. And don’t forget the 6-pack swap.

b) The Polish Club

The Polo Restaurant is operating again, so Polish dumplings are available if you are looking for a meal. Also, please support our hosts by buying an interesting imported commercial beer or two from their well-stocked bar.

c) Raffle

Buy tickets in the monthly raffle for a chance to win great prizes and earn NOOKIE points for the big annual prize draw.

d) Education Session

With the days shortening and the temperature dropping, this month we take close look at Bocks – those darker stronger lagers that originated from Einbeck but became popular in Munich.

e) Consider the Safety of Your Community

Please be aware that we are still in a pandemic. If you have symptoms, get tested, and if you or a close contact has recently tested positive for COVID, please do the right thing by the club, play it safe and stay at home this month – we’ll look forward to seeing you in May.

And of course, please drink responsibly and make appropriate transport arrangements.

How many dry hops are optimal? It’s a question to which everyone has an answer.. but many answers are different. Our July education session will use a recent study undertaken by a US-based Professor of Fermentation Science, Tom Shellhammer, to explore dry hop dosage rates and also show how “hop creep” can cause your dry hops to trigger a re-fermentation and yield unpredictable results.

As always, the education session commences at 7:30pm at the Gorman Arts Centre in Civic, with the monthly club meeting commencing shortly afterward. This is a very worthwhile session for any hop-headed brewer to attend, and remember, the first meeting is free for new members so feel free to bring a friend.

Library

Make sure you check out the library account. Visit: https://canberrabrewers.librarika.com/ and check out some great resources and reserve a book or two to read over the next month. You can reserve a copy of something and we’ll deliver it at the meeting. If the book is on loan, email education@canberrabrewers.com.au and we’ll arrange it to be brought back for you to borrow.  Don’t have access to the library? Email us and we’ll hook you up.

Christmas Party

Christmas has crept up on us with all our focus on the ANHC this year. We’d like to get an expression of interest for a Christmas party around the next few weekends in December.
Like previous years we would like it to be a family event so we’d like to seek availability of members and their families in the coming weeks to make this happen.
Depending on numbers we will consider events for the kidlets and a suitable location.
Proposed dates would be 8th-9th or 15th-16th December?
Please post your preferred day and how many attending, including kids and their ages here.

National Multicultural Festival Sub-Committee

The 2019 National Multicultural Festival, colloquially known by us as the Multicultural Festival(MCF) will be held on the 15-17th February.  The Festival is far and away our biggest and most important fundraiser and makes possible such things as International Home Brew Day, Wig and Pen Brew day, Oktoberfest, Christmas party, BJCP,  Club Library and more.  We are looking for people interested in being a part of the MCF sub-committee to be instrumental in organising a successful MCF.  Please talk to the President for more information about MCF.

Six-Pack Swap

The last club meeting for the year is next Wednesday 5 December, and along with it is your last chance to join the 6 pack swap. You contribute a six pack of your beers and get to sample a mixed six pack of styles, flavours, brewing techniques and ingredients, all packaged up by your fellow brewers. (It doesn’t matter if your beers will need a bit more time in the bottle before they’re ready to drink, join the swap and just suggest a ‘don’t drink before’ date). Add your details in the forum. Please put some kind of identifying mark or label on your bottles and bring them along to swap on Wednesday night.
A few of us are preparing for the BJCP exam in February 2019 and are looking to hone our beer description skills. This isn’t about passing judgement on your contribution to the swap, but if you’d like to hear feedback on how some of us are learning to describe your beer, mention it in the forum post and we’ll share our thoughts with you.

N.O.O.K.I.E !

Please don’t forget to bring beer to the meeting.  Your committee will furnish you with additional entries in the annual N.O.O.K.I.E. raffle.  Brewers who bring at least 750mls of beer will receive 1x N.O.O.K.I.E. entry and brewers who bring a keg will receive 3x N.O.O.K.I.E. entries.  Brewers can claim their N.O.O.K.I.E. entries from the raffle table when tickets are being sold on the night.

7th November 2018 – 7:30pm @ Gorman House

Education Session

This month we welcome a club legend Steve Kirby of Stone Dog Meadery.  Steve will be talking to us about Braggots and how you can make them at home.  This is sure to be a really interesting session so make sure you’re at the meeting by 7.30 to get a seat.

Six-Pack Swap

Bring along a six pack of your own crafted brews to the November meeting, swap and go home with a mixed six pack. A great way to share your brewing and sample the efforts of other members across a range of beer styles.  Add your beer to the forum list and bring them along to the November meeting (with an identifying label or distinguishing mark so we all know what we’re drinking when we get them home).

Raffle

4kg of locally produced honey + other prizes

2018 Club Member of the Year

On Thursday the 1st of November you would have received an email about The Craig Robinson Memorial Trophy which is awarded to a club member who has demonstrated passion, generosity and devotion to the club over the last year.  If you think there is club member that has demonstrated these attributes then please forward your nomination to CRMtrophy@canberrabrewers.com.au by Sunday 25th November 2018 8pm.  For more details please read the 2018 Club Member of the Year link.

BJCP Exam Preparation

We still have some spots available for our BJCP tasting exam scheduled for 24th February – and to help get everybody ready, are gearing up for some exam study sessions.  Expanding on the tasting course we run each year, these sessions will focus on how to properly judge beer, and fill out a quality BJCP scoresheet.  Put your name down for a session in the thread here.  Patrick can provide more information at the meeting on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, we also need beer to practice on!  We’re after home-brew that we can judge in an exam-type setting – preferably beers that fit one of the classic BJCP styles, but we can be a little flexible.  Good and faulted beers welcome.  We’re after at least 500mL of each sample and are happy to collect at the meeting. Flick an email to bjcp@canberrabrewers.com.au if you can help.  We can give feedback to the brewer, or keep the brewer anonymous if they wish.

NOOKIE !

You look like you need a weekend away with that someone special.
Bring beer to the meeting and your committee will furnish you with additional entries in the annual N.O.O.K.I.E. raffle.  Brewers who bring at least 750mls of beer will receive 1 N.O.O.K.I.E. entry and brewers who bring a keg will receive 3 N.O.O.K.I.E. entries.  Brewers can claim their N.O.O.K.I.E. entries from the raffle table when tickets are being sold on the night.
