Brewers!

The April/Easter Club meeting is coming up soon… Thursday, 6th April 2023 @ 7:30pm.

The Polish White Eagle Club is hosting us again at 28 David St Turner ACT https://goo.gl/maps/KGLdTnfnEtX16UWg8
If you’re feeling peckish before the meeting, then why not arrive early and grab a feed at the Polish Club. They have a range of delicious traditional Polish food available. Check out their menu here: https://tinyurl.com/2yzn3765
Please support our hosts and buy your first beer of the evening from the Polo Club. They have a variety of interesting imported beers behind the bar to choose from.

Club announcements

The April meeting will be a Special General Meeting to present the financial accounts to the club. Many thanks to Ike, Chuck and Spaz for their efforts on this.

New members always welcome

Have you thought about home-brewing? Your first club meeting is free to attend.
Do you home-brew and you’ve heard rumours about how good the club is?
Got a mate who needs to up his home-brew game?
Come along to the meeting and find out what this great hobby is all about. Bring along your latest to share.

Education Session – Liquid:Grain ratio

Watch in utter amazement as Kurtz shows you bottles with cracked grain and water in them.
We will discuss L:G ratio and why it is important, then wonder why anecdotal and even controlled experiments (based only on taste) show that it may not be.
We will feel at one with the cherry blossoms of Japan that started a bit early this year and contemplate the whole not just pick the blossoms out that fit. We will discuss, time permitting exactly what you feel no-sparge is all about and have a brief look at George Fix’s observations.

Prizes, prizes, prizes!

As usual, there will be a range of swag up for grabs at the raffle and earn NOOKIE at the same time.
More details to come.

6-pack swap

It’s on again! Give six of your latest creation and receive six different beers. What a deal!
Details available on forum https://tinyurl.com/2s3v42nv and on the members-Facebook page.
New members can bring a six pack along and we will fit you in.

Thirsty?

Have you brewed something that you’re particularly proud of? Want to get some feedback from some of the best brewers and judges in the country?
Then bring your latest creation to the meeting to share. Don’t forget, there’s extra NOOKIE for bringing a bottle, more if you bring a keg.

Safety considerations

Please consider your fellow club-members and the community, if you’re displaying symptoms of COVID, please RAT before arriving. Also please consider staying at home if you’re a close contact.
Finally, please drink responsibly. There’s a bunch of people who share Ubers or car pool. Reach out on the forum (https://tinyurl.com/4ted4s7y) or the Facebook page if you’re looking for a ride.

Brewers,

Who’s ready for the first in-person meeting of 2022? And it’s a big one – Annual General Meeting time!

If you’re interested in helping to run the club, please consider nominating yourself before the meeting!

Meeting Details

When: Thursday 3 March 2022, 7:30pm – 10pm.

Where: Polish White Eagle Club, 38 David Street, Turner 2612 – main hall.
Please Note: The on-site restaurant is presently not running due to an ownership change. The Duxton is right over the road and serves a great meal.

Who: Attendance for non-members is free for their first meeting, but after then a paid membership is required.

Please make sure you only come if you are feeling well and not displaying any symptoms (get tested if you are!). COVID-19 measures have been loosening but best to check ACT Health’s restrictions as they’re changing over time. At the time of this email we are required to check in at licensed bars and pubs using the Check In CBR app and masks are still required indoors but we’re fine for numbers and now can have a beverage while standing as well as sitting…progress!

Annual General Meeting and Committee Election

The AGM covers off a range of club business, but of particular note is the Committee election.

If you are interested in helping run the club as a member of the Committee, express your interest in advance of the AGM by contacting our President Michael Brown (MTB on the forum), get in touch with the person who currently holds a position you’re interested in (list available here) or email committee.nominations@canberrabrewers.com.au. Nominations are welcome on the night as well.

Speaking from experience, joining the Committee is a really great way to get more involved in the Club, meet more members, take part in pretty much everything and help make the Club as great as it can be. It’s run by members just like you and me, so get involved!

The Committee is currently comprised of the following positions:
– President
– Treasurer
– Social Secretary
– Competition Secretary
– Education Officer
– Editor
– Webmaster
– Asset Manager
– General Members

Bring your beer/brews to share

Remember, our meetings are all about brewing – which includes sampling. Bring your best in bottles, growlers or kegs, and remember you earn NOOKIE entry points for the annual prize draw.

Monthly 6-pack swap

Bring 6 of your brews and you’ll go home with a mixed 6 of beers made by your fellow club members. The more people we get the better, there isn’t a limit on the number of people who can take part and it’s a great way to get feedback for brewers of all abilities. Label your beers and post what you’re bringing on the forum.

Raffle and NOOKIE

The raffle returns! Prizes, beer and brewing prizes!

We’ll also be drawing the winner of the annual NOOKIE prize – this year the winner is going to Whitton Malt House. It’s where Voyager Malt comes from, heck yeah.

Education

No education this month as we’ve got AGM business to do. Stay tuned for next meeting though.

Cheers,

Kip.

Brewers,

It’s almost the end of the year but there’s time for one more meeting. We’ve been able to snag a Thursday slot for the second week of December. We’re working on a consistent timeslot for the coming year and will let members know as soon as we’ve got one locked in.
Please make sure you only come if you are feeling well and not displaying any symptoms (get tested if you are!). It is mandatory to check-in with the ACT app, follow current ACT Health guidelines and please make sure you act responsibly in a COVID-safe manner.

Meeting Details

When: Thursday 9 December 2021, 7:30pm – 10pm.

Where: Polish White Eagle Club, 38 David Street, Turner 2612 – main hall.

Who: Attendance for non-members is free for their first meeting, but after then a paid membership is required. Renew your membership here.

Education

Chuck will be running a session on cleaning and sanitising. Ideally we’ll be able to run this in a room off to the side from the hall where the meeting is being held. Kicking off 7.30pm before launching into the rest of the meeting in the main hall afterwards.

Kristmas-fest!

Unfortunately, restrictions prevented us from running our Oktoberfest this year, so we’re combining it with the Christmas Party to form Krist-mas Fest!

Kristmas-fest will be held on 11 December at Weston Park. Kicking off around 12. If you’re interested, please enter name plus any extras you’re bringing along. If you have any dietary requirements, please say so.

There’ll be a German-style beer competition on the day so bring your German beers along. Bring any other beers as well!

Club will organise meat and bread. If everyone else could bring salad, dessert plus some beer (if possible) that’d be great. Extra points for German and/or Christmassy salads, desserts and beer.

Get more details and put your name down on the forum.

Club Member of the Year

It’s time to think about nominating someone who has made your year in the Canberra Brewers that little bit better, someone who has gone out of their way to help you and fellow brewers and generally been a part of what makes this a great club.

We are now taking nominations for the 2021 Club Member of the Year award. The winner will be selected by a panel of the previous three winners: Charles Newton, Stephen Neilsen and Dave Johnson. Nominations can be PM’d to Charles Newton, Stephen (dr K) or Dave (Fish Frenzy) before 5pm, Sunday, 5th December.

ACT Competition

There are a few certificates, medals and scoring sheets for beers from our ACT Competition that haven’t been picked up. Announcements of results were done last meeting but if you weren’t able to receive them then seek out Richard Brown or Phil Duftman as they’ll bring them to the meeting.

Lots of things happening and it looks like the Polo restaurant at the Polish Club may be running during our meeting too – DUMPLINGS!

Cheers,

Kip.
